Links Book Club | | Summer Film Series - May 25 - The Abortion Diaries
The
Abortion Diaries is a documentary, by Penny Lane, featuring 12 women
who speak candidly about their experiences with abortion. The women are
doctors, subway workers, artists, activists, military personnel,
teachers and students; they are Black, Latina, Jewish, and White; they
are mothers or child-free; they range in age from 19 to 54. Their
stories weave together with the filmmaker's diary entries to present a
compelling, moving and at times surprisingly funny "dinner party" where
the audience is invited to hear what women say behind closed doors
about motherhood, medical technology, sex, spirituality, love, work and
their own bodies. 30 minutes.In
1970s Iran, Marji Satrapi watches through her young eyes, the hated
Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution. As she grows up, she witnesses
first hand how the new Iran has become a repressive tyranny on its own.
Persepolis, based on the graphic novel, is a timely and timeless story
of a young girl's life under the Islamic Revolution. Satrapi's art is
minimal and stark, yet often charming and humorous as it depicts the
madness around her. Despite the grimness, Satrapi never lapses into
sensationalism or sentimentality. Skillfully presenting a child's view
of war and her own shifting ideals, she also shows daily life in Tehran
and her family's pride and love for their country despite the
tumultuous times. June 29. Animated. 96 minutes.
- July 27 - Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes
Hip-hop
is a man's game, but does it have to be? A self-described "hip-hop
head" takes an in-depth look at masculinity and manhood in rap and
hip-hop, where creative genius collides with masculinity, sexism,
misogyny, violence and homophobia, exposing the complex intersections
of culture and commerce. Filmmaker Byron Hurt was watching rap music
videos on BET when he realized that each video was nearly identical:
guys in fancy cars throw money at the camera while scantily clad women
dance in the background, and decided to make a film about the gender
politics of hip-hop, the music, and the culture that he grew up with.
The result is riveting.- August 24 - No! The Rape Documentary
The
groundbreaking feature length documentary by Aishah Simmons, an incest
and rape survivor, features riveting testimonials from black women rape
survivors who defy victimization. Violence prevention advocates,
sociologists, historians, and leading human rights activists provide an
interdisciplinary context to examine sexual violence in
African-American communities. Impacting archival footage, spirited
music, and poetry performances take viewers on a journey from
enslavement of African people in the United States through present day.
August 24. 94 minutes
